Project Type: Educational
Project Name: Brockport College Health and Physical Education Center
Client: University of the State of New York System
Location: Brockport, NY
Cost: $8 Million
Description:

The Health and Physical Education Center, Brockport, NY is part of the University of the State of New York System. The building provides instructional, exhibition and ancillary spaces necessary to complete the health and physical education program Sited to the north of the existing facility, the linear form of the building defines an area for meaningful campus growth

The space is organized into four major volumes -- pool, academic areas, gymnasiums, and ice arena -- separated by skylit circulation areas. Major functions are disposed on ground and first (main) floor levels, with ancillary services tucked into a lower and mezzanine level.

The building was conceived as a linear volume set into grade connecting with the existing building, and with grade, at two main levels. The "Architectural skin" envelops a structural frame with concrete slab and column construction and masonry bearing walls. The building interior has a transparent quality revealing its activities to the rest of the campus. Major spaces on all levels have glazed walls. Interior walls are burnished concrete block.

At the time this project was designed and built, Mr. Preiss was principal in charge for design with the national architectural firm of Caudill Rowlett Scott, which specializes in schools, universities and YMCA's.
