Project Type: Courthouse
Project Name: Putnam County Courthouse
Client: Putnam County Highways & Facilities Department
Location: Carmel, NY
Cost: $20 Million
Description:

Provided court planning and full architectural services for this new 60,000 s.f. Courthouse. On-grade parking provided for 150 vehicles.

The first floor is occupied by Jury Assembly, Court Clerks and a public Law Library. The second floor includes a Family Court and Hearing Room. On all Courtroom floors, there are Judges’ Chambers, Jury Deliberation Rooms, Prisoner Cells and Conference Rooms. The third floor has two County Courtrooms.

The Supreme Court, which features operable windows and a law Library occupy the fourth floor. The entire courtroom floors are served with a Public Elevator, an Elevator for Judges,” Jury and Staff and a prisoner elevator. There is a prisoner receiving Sally Port and holding cells on the lowest level, as well as a room to create another Courtroom.

The Courthouse was carefully sited to overlook Lake Gleneida as does the Historic Courthouse of 1814 and the Putnam County Office Building. The sloping ground to the east allows a prisoner Sally Port entrance to be on a lower level away from the public side of the building.

The exterior of the courthouse is beige brick to match the existing county Office Building. There are also bands of pre-cast concrete at the bottom and top of the courthouse to emphasize the base and the cornice line.
