Description:

The $93M 10-story (250,000 s.f.) brick Courthouse is the largest and most technologically advanced in Connecticut. The "Courthouse Green" is a welcoming, safe, distinctive environment inspired by New England town greens. The driveway frames the central lawn and walkway, which are spatially defined by the courthouse, its garage, and dense shrubbery. A 220,000 s.f. structured parking garage for 625 vehicles will be provided. The interior design of the courthouse includes three circulatory paths for security purposes so that complete separation of public, staff and defendants is maintained. The exterior design of the courthouse features brick walls, precast trim, operable windows, and granite entry steps. The 22 courtrooms feature high ceilings, carpet, oak paneling, desks and seating. They also have flat screened computers, audio connection to the holding cells and a computerized digital recording system "For the Record," which will archive transcripts.

First Level - (basement at rear) -secured parking for judges and staff.

Second Level - (at grade in rear) - Sallyport prisoner entrance and cellblocks.

Third Level - (main entrance) - three-level lobby with stained glass windows set in a three-story glass wall. The lobby marble walls are inscribed with quotes from judicial leaders. There are three metal detectors and an X-ray machine for security checks. This level includes two large arraignment courtrooms, the criminal clerk's office and the public defender's office.

Fourth Level - State attorney's office, the chief clerk's office and a concession area

Fifth Level - family courtrooms, office for victim services, court reporters and jury assembly room.

Sixth Level - criminal courtrooms, public conference rooms and a full-service 2-story Law Library with 35,000 volumes and 83,000 volumes on microfiche. The court service center is designed to provide court information to the public and members of the bar. It has computers, facsimiles, telephones, copy machines, forms and an area for children.

Seventh Level - juvenile and criminal courtrooms and the 2nd floor of the 2-story Law Library, an attorneys' lounge and the juvenile clerk's office.

Eighth Level - civil courtrooms and public conference rooms.

Ninth Level - complex litigation and civil courtrooms.

Tenth Level - mechanical room.
